Hi! My name is Victoria Haugsness and I am more than excited to be interning with Dr. Sterling and her team. I am an animal lover, and enjoy being around my family and friends. I am a senior at Washburn University and I will be graduating in May with a BA in Psychology and a minor in Sociology. Psychology has always been interesting to me, but it wasn’t until a year ago that I realized I had a true passion for sport psychology.

Growing up I had played many different sports, but softball was the one that I was drawn to most. It took up the majority of my time, and still does to this day. My first three years of college were spent as a student athlete for a couple different colleges in Tennessee. Being from the Kansas City area, I not only experienced what it was like to be a collegiate athlete, but also the tolls of being far from home. Going through hard times mentally myself with the team I was on from my previous college lead me to want to pursue sport psychology.

I want to be able to help athletes who are going through hard times themselves mentally, and show them that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. I want to help them work through those times and can come out still loving their sport and wanting to succeed.

Although I am no longer an athlete, I am now a coach. I coach a 16u travel softball team and give pitching lessons in my free time. After experiencing some challenging situations with coaches as an athlete in the past, it has been my focus to model positivity as a coach and to treat athletes as people, not just athletes. I want to share my knowledge of softball with the young women on my team, helping them grow to be more successful, both in softball and in life.

Even though the idea of making sport psychology a career only came to me a year ago, I feel as though because of my own history in sports, I have already experienced so much. I still have a lot to learn and I know Dr. Sterling and her team will teach me as much as they can throughout my internship. I am so eager to be a part of Sterling Sport Mindset and am ready to soak up every learning experience I can get while I am a part of this team!
