It’s Tuesday. One week after New Year’s Day. January 1 has come and gone.
The first Monday (for all of you start-on-Monday fans) is over now too.
Have you started your goal work yet?
Hopefully you answered yes and you’re killing it! (I haven’t missed a day on my workout plan yet–why, thanks! I’m pumped too!)
But maybe your excitement has waned. Or you’ve just put it off. February is really a better month for goals, right? Maybe you were a bit too ambitious. Maybe it’s freaking cold outside and it’s dark early in the morning. And you hate the treadmill. There is literally no other way to get fit, right?
Maybe you’re questioning your decision to set goals at all. Maybe you’ve got a goal setting hangover.
So many goals. So many great goals. And you were so pumped about where you were headed.
Until it made you think of where you are.
And where you are isn’t where you want to be. And now that you think about it. It’s not be even close to where you thought you’d be at this point in your life. Well that escalated quickly. Ah, the shame spiral. Hello, old friend.
Your good vibes just turned a little or really sad.
Don’t worry. It’s not you. It’s the scarcity mindset.
What might that be? It’s when we start thinking of all we lack and feel a little desperate for change. A little fire is good for you, but scarcity mindset doesn’t usually put us in a good place. It causes strain. Not exactly where we want to be to make positive change.
I get it. Been there. You start optimistic. Then feel a bit frantic in a I’ve got to make this happen (like now) kind of way. Then you feel overwhelmed. Then tired. Then lethargic. Then defeated. Maybe all within 30 seconds.
Let’s turn that frown upside down. 🙂
The key is an abundance mindset. It’s not as fluffy and out-there as you think, so stay with me.
We are more likely to make and stick with change when we’re coming from a good place. A happy place. An it’s all gonna work out place. An abundant place.
It’s like flow in sport. You’re in the zone. It feels effortless. Everything’s going right. Even if a call goes against you. You can shake it off. Maybe even laugh with your shrug. Because it’s all good.
So how do you get there? I’ve got some tips.
Goal setting from abundance. Let’s get you in the zone.
First, start of listing things you want BUT include things you already have. What?? Yep. If you’re listing 10 things you want, include some things you already achieved. It’s possible to want things you already have.
Example: I want a great team, a window office, and to be able to run a 5K.
I already have two of those things so right now I’m 2 for 3. But hey “2 out of 3 ain’t bad.” In fact, look. at. me! Life is pretty good. I’ve got a lot to be thankful for.
Feels so much better than just thinking of three things I don’t have…hello sinking feeling in my stomach. hello scarcity.
Okay, so you’ve got your list and it includes things you already have and damn if you aren’t feeling better already.
Next step. Choose one of those goals…it’s probably one of the three you selected in last week’s SMART blog. You are playing along at home, right? Write it down, because you’ll want to look at it often.
Now, you may be noticing some doubt, worry, and shame coming up. Often disguised as “what if’s.” What if I can’t do this? What if I’ll never be a runner? What if something comes up and I get off plan? What if I never succeed at anything again?
Do a thought download to get all of that out on paper.
Now think about what the you who achieves the goal looks like. What would that goal-achiever-you tell the present you? Address each of the doubts with your brilliant-already-been-there perspective.
Now write down the steps goal-achiever-you took to get there. Like you’re telling a story in reverse order. Start with the last step and work back to the beginning. You’ll be amazed with how wise goal achiever you is!
This technique works on so many levels. Abundance over scarcity. It allows for gratitude, overcoming doubts, and provides the imagery of having been there. Winning on so many levels. Now go get those goals!
I’m happy to help! Schedule a mini strategy session. We’ll talk goals or any other mindset challenge!
